Have you ever wondered why we have this lantern-like thingy hanging in the church? And what is behind the metal door?
Ah, liturgical symbols. As Episcopalians, we are surrounded by them, but we take many of them for granted, or they go un-noticed. However, everything about our church building, and about the liturgy that fills them, is there for a reason. Usually, these things were practical (or "useful") -- not just a meaningless feature. They accomplished or communicated something specific. Eventually, they became fixtures (whether real or metaphorical) of our worship.
