Bushenyi Alliance for Rural Health and Development (BARHD)
In 2005, a long-standing relationship that brought aid to rural southwest Uganda in Africa was jeopordized due to political and belief differences. The idea of a humanitarian organization that would bypass these differences resulted in the formation of the Bushenyi Alliance for Rural Health and Development (BARHD).
BARHD was incorporated as a non-profit in January, 2006 and received IRS tax-exempt 501(c)(3) status in December, 2006. In August, 2007 we established a sister organization in Uganda called Bushenyi Integrated Rural Development (BIRD). BIRD is an NGO (non-governmental organization) and funding goes directly to health and education needs, bypassing all government and faith-baised entities.
St. Michael's provides funds every year for orphaned Ugandan children to continue their education. The money covers the cost of tuition, room and board, books, and school uniforms. Since its beginnings in 2006, The Bushenyi Alliance for Rural Health and Development project has grown into an ecumenical undertaking, involving nearly 300 students in several schools in the Bushenyi area. One of the schools, Bishop McAllister School, is named for a former Bishop of Oklahoma. Please contact Rosemary Ford (405-808-1848) or Jocelyn Pedersen (405-823-7674) for more information.
Donations to BAHRD may be made directly to St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 1601 W. Imhoff Road, Norman, Oklahoma 73072, with "BAHRD" written in the memo line.
St. Michael's Knitters
The Knitters and Crocheters of St. Michael's (including participants from several other churches in the Norman area!) make items to be given away to others. These items include prayer shawls, purple baby caps (to raise awareness of Shaken Baby Syndrome), scarves for the Norman Community Christmas Dinner, small articles of clothing (caps, scarves, ditty bags, and vests)for Mariners and Special Olympics. We sometimes do special projects which are brought to our attention. The knitting group meets Wednesday evenings in the Ingathering Space from 6:30 pm-7:30 pm.
This ministry serves meals at "Food and Shelter for Friends" in Norman, Oklahoma.
On the second Saturday of each month our parish is responsible for providing and serving lunch at Food and Shelter for Friends in downtown Norman. Sometimes we cook the main meal… sometimes we buy it. Members of our parish provide cookies, milk, and side dishes. We also deliver the food to the shelter and serve it to those in need.

Each year the amount of baskets given by St. Michael's has increased due to our parishioners donations. We collect money for, prepare and deliver baskets on Thanksgiving week to families in need through ACTION NORMAN.
Norman Community Christmas Dinner
Started at St. Michael's in 1987 with the slogan "No one should be alone on Christmas." bringing together those who had no place to go for Christmas Dinner and fellowship. Still led by Bob Magarian, the dinner is now held at Norman High School and feeds around 1300. Donations of money, toys and gifts start December. St.Michael's always has the first chance at signing up to help the day of the dinner. The list is usually out the first two weeks in December.
Come and see!
